The Oldest Submerged Town | Past Adventures

In the 1960 Professor Nick Flemming discovered the ruins of an ancient harbour town submerged beneath the Aegean sea.

There is lay until a groups of archaeologists led by Doctor Jon Henderson decided to study it. Andy was hired as the dive supervisor on this historic project. Doctor Henderson theorised that the town may date back as far as 3,500 years ago and it may prove to be the oldest town lost to the sea in the World.

If this was the case it would have existed during the time of the Trojan War and may have launched some of the thousand ships which sailed with the ancient Greek heroes to Troy, men like Achilles, Odysseus and Agamemnon. In fact the area the the town lay in was once ruled by the Agamemnon, king of the Myceneans.

The project began in 2009 with a plan to study and survey the site in detail with a view to further investigations in 2010 before excavation could begin in 2011.

What the team discovered was a network of road, building, chambered tombs and grave site across a huge area. The town was strewn with pieces of pottery lying on the surface and it was this pottery which was used to date the site. This showed that that town had indeed been in existence in the times of the ancient Greek bronze age but had in fact been occupied long before this. This site had been in use 5,500 years ago and remained occupied until it was finally lost to the sea.
