The UK’s first civilian Skydive to SCUBA dive.
2025 wasn’t bad. But I missed some projects and things on my To Do List. Some for reasons beyond my control, some because I had to make a choice on priorities and some because, frankly, I wasn’t organised or motivated or disciplined as I should have been.
So, I’ll try and be a little better next year than last. That’s all we can do.
Happy New Year (as I doubt I’ll be up at midnight).

About as cold as winter freediving get.
In Alaska a few years ago filming for the BBC and diving under the ice on a single breath (they had cut another hole for me to exit).
The water was barely above freezing and the air temp was -28C.
Those fins you see are no more. I laid them on the ice after the dive and when I picked them up one shattered. It was that cold.

I recently posted a few pics and video from our HALO boogie out in Denmark.
But everyone has to start somewhere and my first real High Altitude work was training with a skydiving legend over the Arizona Desert 12 years ago.
This shot is me, inexperienced and anxious, before my first HAHO jump (high altitude high opening) from about 29,000ft.
The view was, once I’d sorted out my terrible exit, incredible.

Between skydiving plan, projects and work and a busy year of stunts I’ve not had as much time as normal to dedicate to my diving.
Apart from some small excursions into flooded mines to recce potential projects and the cool, but relatively quick and low scale, UK’s first ever Sports Skydiving To SCUBA Dive 2025 was not huge for underwater achievements.

But myself and @richstevenson.uk have been chatting (when he was filming me as an underwater Santa - more on that next week) and we’ve a couple of ideas for early 2026.

Wild camping - the winter edition.

This one was up in the Cairngorms filming Ptarmigan for the BBC. As well as turning white in the winter (to camouflage themselves from predators) they also ‘bury’ themselves to shelter from the cold winds.
We decided to do likewise and four us overnighted in our home made snow cave.

Freediving and snorkelling is still possible in the UK in winter.
We shot some stuff around a shipwreck off Devon in winter for a motorbike company.
The sea in the South of the UK rarely drops below 8C so a 7mm suit is fine if you’re active.
And a hood. Wear a wetsuit hood. I forgot mine but had to get in anyway. Trust me, wear a hood.

Some talks have been focused on pure adventure at schools, @royalscotgeosoc or events like The @dofeuk Gold Awards at Buckingham Palace.

Corporate clients, with talks mainly based on my approach to Risk and Fear - with examples from exploratory cave diving, High Altitude Skydiving, Expedition to locations like Greenland and Bomb Disposal - have included Network Rail, Cazenove Wealth Management, CityWire Welath Management and others.

A chance to pass on some of the lessons I’ve learned (often through my own mistakes) to others who have found them useful.

In cave diving redundancy is key. We are reliant o

In cave diving redundancy is key.
We are reliant on our equipment to keep us alive. We have protocols if we lose visibility but life is easier and safer if you can see.
It is a standard drill to carry at least 3 torches.
-A main
-A backup
-A second backup

But on very long dives, sometimes spending days underground/underwater, you decide extra redundancy is prudent is damage or battery life may be an issue.
Or, as in this case, I have different torches for different reasons.
-2 spotlights for long range
-2 wide angle filming lights to help capture footage
-the headtorch for when I exit the water and begin dry caving, having removed the other 4 heavy torches.

Too much equipment can cause as many issues as too little in cave diving so everything we carry has to be justified.

We were running some civilian HALO jumps from 25,000 feet and one of the jumpers asked if I’d jump with him to capture some photos and footage of him.

Well, since I had to jump anyway and my work was done I climbed out and filmed his exit and 2 minutes of freefall.

He wore a 360 camera and gave me the footage so I managed to get some footage of me climbing out early 5 miles up.
