A few more (action) shots from the Skydiving World Championships @skydivearizona a few weeks back.

We had 16 Speed Skydiving competitors per load so timing between each exit was crucial to maintain safety. We needed to leave enough space between us but not so much that the last person out missed the Landing Area.
.
That gap is not the same each time. You have to consider the speed of the plane, the wind and therefore the ground speed to work out each jumper's exit separation in seconds.
.
When you're doing over 500kmph safety becomes pretty important.

There is something primevally peaceful about cooking outside on a campfire.

In the Forces we used to call fire 'caveman tv' which seems apt. It was the same on expeditions. People would automatically gather around the fire, no matter how warm the weather was, and often just quietly gaze into the flames.

I never thought that, in my 40s, I’d get to repr

I never thought that, in my 40s, I’d get to represent my country. But it shows what the continued and consistent application of training and commitment can achieve.
.
And, under these conditions, where Speed Skydivers from across the Globe were reaching speeds of over 300 miles per hour in freefall, it’s pretty important to make sure our kit works as well as we do. When your competition time, from 13,500 feet to 5,600 feet, is measured in seconds. And you have only a brief moment after the alarms in your helmet sound to pull out of the dive, slow down to something resembling a safe 120 mph and pull your parachute.

And time is already ticking…10 months to The World Cup (Skydiving) in the Czech Republic. Hopefully I can make TeamGB again in 2023.

Into the planet.

As I begin the recovery from travel and 2 weeks in the USA competing at Speed Skydivng for TeamGB at the Skydiving World Championships it's already time to start planning the next project.
.
Opportunites often present themselves unexpectedly or plans need to change but currently I'm investigating the potential for a multi-day, solo project that will see me cavediving and camping underground for 3 or 4 days.
.
Let's see what the remainder of 2022 has in store.

The Speed Skydiving event of The World Skydiving Championships is over for 2022.

Thanks to @skydivearizona for hosting, @britishskydiving and the whole TeamGB for the support.
.
But the biggest thanks goes to my fellow competitors. Speed Skydiving is a solo event so your team mates are your competitors. There is great camaraderie and encouragement between us all and we were all cheering for everyone to go faster.
.
Special shout out to the only other Brit competing in Speed @jstcoaching who set a new GB record (and can be seen swooping for the flag I’m holding in on of these shots).

The next World Champs is in Israel in 2024….

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a @panerai and @watchfinder event in Mayfair to give a talk on cave diving and underwater exploration, showing the guests some of the places I have recently taken my watch.
Afterwards a number of the guests wanted a closer inspection of my watch to see if I was telling the truth when I said it showed zero signs of damage. That was true, however, I realised, as I took it off, that I hadn’t cleaned it properly from the last cave diving trip and the back was still covered in mud. At least it shows my stories are real.

I’m heading into London today to speak at a @pan

I’m heading into London today to speak at a @panerai and @watchfinder event.
.
It’s a little insight into some of the extreme conditions myself, my friends and my equipment, including my Panerai watch, has had to endure over the years on underwater exploration, adventure and filming projects.
.
From dives of 120m deep where the pressure is 13 times that on the surface, and our breathing gases would be toxic if inhaled on land, to dives in abandoned Arctic mine systems where the water temperature is barely above freezing and hypothermia, with dives times running over 4 hours, is a greater risk than decompression sickness.
.
And sometimes the hard bit is before you even reach the water, having to drag all the heavy dive kit for hours through a labyrinth of tight, muddy caves first.
.
Of course sometimes it’s as simple, easy and fun as freediving with a DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle) amongst the caves and cliffs of Cornwall under a summer sun.

The wreck lies 120m down at the bottom of the Aegean Sea and an hour's divev on the ship required around 6 hours of decompression. And we didn't have the wet bell (the chamber we're in in this photo) for the final dive.
.
Decompressing means slowing making your way back to the surface stopping at various depths along the way. So, it took as 3 or 4 minutes to freefall through the water from the suurface to Britannic, an hour on the shipwreck then another 6 hours to ascend back to fresh air.
.
But still the best shipwreck dive I have done. And, after a few years of focusing on cave diving, I'm hoping to have some more technical, deep sea projects happening in 2023.

With 4 weeks to go before I head to the States for the World Skydiving Champs jumping is becoming the focus.

Weekly sessions in the wind tunnel with @jstcoaching training speed (and destroying my helmet on the net) and trying to get the time and weather to fall out of the sky is taking over from my usual aquatic pursuits.
.
But at the end of October that focus will switch back to the more usual underwater activities including putting time into raising my freediving game and a cave diving filmingg trip to France.
.
But for now it's all about Blue Skies and Fast Falling.

Time was a larger factor than normal on my latest

Time was a larger factor than normal on my latest cave diving trip. When diving time underwater, time at depth, time in decompression, time of use of your CO2 scrubber are all important. But for our last trip we had to negotiate a tidal sump about an hour’s caving, dragging dive kit, from the entrance. This part of the cave fills up with water at high tide and become impassable.
.
So the plan was to arrive just as the passageway opened, get to dive base (another 90 mins of caving) to dive sumps 2 to 6 (these sumps are permanently underwater). Then my dive buddy, Pete Hall, would investigate a new, dry side passage while I went on to explore the end of sump 7. And with all that done it was time to make out way back through the tidal sump before it closed again.
.
We had to calculate what time of day the tidal sump would open and close then work out our plan based around that central piece of information. Everything from our RV time at the car park, our time leave the cars, to arrive at the cave entrance, our last safe turn around point in the deepest sections was all based around these times.
.
This trip, even more than my normal cave diving trips, was all about… … … timing.

After a few problems and false starts we finally made it to this year's target on our exploration project in a UK cave.
.
With support moving heavy dive kit in the days before, myself and Pete Hall did an 11 hour total trip to cave in and dive through 6 sumps (underwater passageways). At that point we split and Pete investigated a dry side passage and discovered another lead.
.
I carried on underwater into sump 7 diving for around 120m to invesigate a chamber at the end for further extensions and more new cave.
.
It's like doing a 9 hour assualt course with heavy dive kit and 12 cave dives thrown in so you can 'rest'. A long, hard day but wortth the effort to reach this isolated locations. There are still uncharted territories off the map even somewhere as small and populated as Britain.
.
I think the season for this cave is over but I'll be casting my eye onto other projects. However, with 6 weeks before the World Skydiving Championships I need to, temporarily, hang up my fins and focus on freefall.

A few years back I had the chance to do some freediving trainings and filming at Y40 in Italy.
.
I also had the chance to train on the monofin. Not only does it make you feel like a dolphin (dolphin tails are horizontal like this monofin as opposed to sharks’ tails which run vertically. This is due to cetaceans (dolphins, whales and porpoises) being evolved from terrestrial mammals) but it also generates masses of power.

Most things are better shared and diving is no different. It’s certainly more fun and can improve safety. However, sometimes in Cave Diving we choose to dive solo. There are a variety of good reasons why diving solo, or diving as if you were solo even if a buddy happens to be in the same cave, is actually a safer option.
.
Sometimes the depths, distances and length of time submerged make it logistically prohibitive to approach these dives as ’solo’. You need a team plans, team kit and team emergency drills. However, for the majority of my dives I approach it as a solo dive, even if I’m with someone. I take responsibility for looking after myself and solving my own issues. Approaching these projects with a ‘oh my mate will save me’ attitude is not a good idea.
.
And this solo approach, whether I’m actually on my own or not, means I become much more reliant on my equipment, the choice, configuration, serviceability and use, it becomes the only partner I have.

Time. There is never enough. I don’t need more m

Time. There is never enough. I don’t need more money or more power but more time would be wonderful. There never seems to be enough to do all the things we want to do, see all the places, to spend time with all the people we’d like to and make the all differences and changes we’d want to see in the world.
.
This month I spent a few weeks camping with my family in The French Alps and my kids are walking, talking, animated clocks. Their growth acts as a constant reminder about the passage of time and how finite it is.
.
So, I try to find perspective and priorities. This latter will change, sometimes work, sometimes training, sometimes family and sometimes friends but always to make the most of the time we have. To improve, to explore, to enjoy life and to try and make the small difference in the world.
.
And our time in the mountains has inspired me to take on some more mixed mountaineering and diving projects in 2023 and maybe even in 2022…if I have the time...
