I get asked how skydivers know when to deploy their parachutes. We know because of the altitude we’re at. And we know that because we carry Altimeters (Altitude Meters).

They can be worn on the left wrist of chest and we also have access to audible ones we were in our helmets.

Britain’s Ancient Capital, a series covering the astonishing achievements, innovations and importance of the Neolithic people of Orkney is now on @channel4 .

From intricately made houses, seaside sauna, megalithic standing stones and huge burial chambers the activities in New Stone Age of Orkney made it one of the leading technological locations in ancient Europe.
.
I hosted the show along with @chrisgpackham2 @neil_oliver_ and @drshinisomara
.
It saw me dive, climb and paddle around the islands including cross the treacherous Pentland Firth in a boat made of wicker and cowskin…(photos 5 and 7) and excavate and recreate a Bronze Age sauna with Shini (photo 8)

The Cuillin Ridge - Looking like a fossilised Drag

The Cuillin Ridge - Looking like a fossilised Dragon’s back this string of 22 peaks (including 11 Munros) spans 14km and is one of the most challenging and rewarding mountain landscape in the UK.
The Ridge is located on the Isle of Skye and a few years ago I traversed it solo in a day (all photos by me - which often meant setting the timer going, climbing up a route then down-climbing to get the camera and re-climbing). A lot of grades scrambles, a couple of abseils (which I just down-climbed) and a few graded rock climbs up to Severe (but mostly VDiff).
It can be done over 2 days with a bivi at night but I went fast and light and did it in a day. The hardest bit - water. There’s no water up there and the 3 litres I took was not enough. I was so dehydrated by the time I finished.
But for anyone who is fit enough and confident enough in there climbing it may be the best mountain day in the UK.

All in the name of science and STEM education I strapped some prototype jets to my thighs and jumped out of a plane (not before having a go with a motorbike - pics 2 and 3).
